Music and TV star Redfoo says his zany trademark glasses saved him from a serious eye injury after he was hit with a bottle at a Sydney hotel.

"The people were saying at the hospital that I was really lucky because it hit where my glasses are," The X Factor mentor told AAP.

"They said that was right around the temple area and the eye and I'm very lucky.

"It's a gash and they put glue on it (to seal it)."

Redfoo, 39, suffered a gash above his right eye after a bottle was thrown at his head at the Golden Sheaf Hotel in Double Bay in the early hours of Thursday, police say.

The US singer was treated at the scene by paramedics and a 21-year-old man, who allegedly attempted to run away, was charged with malicious wounding.

Redfoo was in a private VIP section of the hotel when he was attacked.

"I was just talking to some girls (and) I just felt `bam!', something hit me in the head," he said.

Redfoo said pubs should only be allowed to serve alcohol in plastic cups or bottles.

"It just doesn't make sense to have such hard objects in a place where people are drinking," he said.

"If I do a show there can be no glass and it is a big issue for performers all the time because people throw bottles on stage."
