Redress payments made to 51 people

Payments have been made to 51 people through the national redress scheme for child sex abuse victims, with the government eager for more organisations to join.

Organisations yet to join the national redress scheme for victims of child sex abuse after vowing to do so will soon be called out by the Australian government.

The decision to publish the names of institutions still to join the scheme comes after news 51 people have received redress payments, while a third of victims who have applied to be part of the scheme were linked to an organisation yet to sign up.

Department of Social Services secretary Kathryn Campbell says Social Services Minister Paul Fletcher has indicated he will soon publish the names of some organisations that haven't joined the scheme.

They will include those named by the royal commission into child sex abuse in institutions that have said they will join.

"I'm about to write to institutions as a scheme operator to inform them of that and allow them to let us know where they're up to," Ms Campbell told a Senate estimates hearing on Thursday.

The department will begin contacting organisations from Thursday, with Ms Campbell expecting some small entities - who will be informed by phone - will be surprised to hear they are captured by the scheme.

Since the scheme opened in July 2018, 2728 people have applied to join it of the 60,000 expected to eventually sign up.

Of those, 869 people - approximately 32 per cent - have been through an initial process showing they are part of an institution that hasn't joined the scheme.

To date, 51 Australians have received payments through the scheme, with the group receiving on average $79,035.

There were 14 payments up to $50,000, 34 payments between $50,000 and $100,000 and fewer than 10 payments up to $150,000.

Another 31 people are considering a payment offer, which they have six months to do.

The department says the number of institutions expected to join the scheme in total will be "in the thousands".

It is still in the process of revising the application form to join the scheme to make it easier to use, after "significant consultations".
