Former NRL second-rower Lagi Setu is eyeing a potential switch to Super Rugby after joining Queensland Country's squad for the National Rugby Championship.
Setu, who played two games for the Sydney Roosters this year but has spent most of the last three seasons in the NSW Cup, has been named on the bench for Country's clash with Perth Spirit in Rockhampton on Saturday.
The 27-year-old has moved back to Brisbane and intends to pursue a career in rugby union, having previously represented the Australian Schoolboys in 2005 as a flanker.
Setu's timing is impeccable, with Queensland Country battling several injuries to key players and in desperate need of reinforcements.
The 187cm, 105kg Setu now has the chance to impress the Queensland Reds coaching staff, who have not actively courted him but could become interested should his switch to union prove a success.
The Reds signed former St George-Illawarra Dragons winger Eto Nabuli earlier this week.
Setu, who tallied 73 NRL games in stints with the Dragons, Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and the Roosters, will be used as an inside centre by Queensland Country.
