Reds now look to chase down Glory

Adelaide United have now handed Perth Glory their two A-League losses this season while also beating them for the FFA Cup title.

Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau's long-term goals might be to develop young talent but in the short-term he wouldn't turn down an A-League title that came back into calculations following Monday's win in Perth.

The Reds beat Perth Glory 2-1 in sweltering near-40 degree temperatures at nib Stadium on Monday night thanks to goals either side of half-time to Craig Goodwin and James Jeggo.

The victory means that Adelaide has handed Perth both their losses this A-League season while also beating Glory in the inaugural FFA Cup final last month.

Despite the fact that Adelaide sits in third position, two points behind the Wellington Phoenix and six behind Perth, they now have the wood on the league-leaders.

Gombau has a longer-term picture in mind but adding an A-League premiership and championship to their FFA Cup triumph in 2015 certainly wouldn't be sneezed at.

"Our goal is to try and be in the finals every year and to produce and work hard with young players," Gombau said.

"We will work very hard over the next two years to produce a lot of young players and we are doing an excellent job with the youth. This is our goal because we are a club that isn't as strong or powerful with money or a big city with a lot of funds.

"But if one year we finish on top then this is perfect if we win the cup, but if not then our goal is to make sure people enjoy watching us play and that they recognise the football Adelaide plays, and that people that come in from the youth have that as a standard."

Meanwhile, Glory coach Kenny Lowe has no reason for concern with his team remaining four points clear atop the ladder heading into the three-week break for the Asian Cup.

Despite having an eight-match winning run at home coming to an end, Glory remain the standard bearers this A-League season and Lowe is content with where they sit.

The team are also close to announcing a new signing to replace injured winger Youssouf Hersi.

"We are looking forward to this break and I don't think that's a negative thing for us. We'll have a few days off and then get back into the swing of things. We are in a nice position and if someone said that at the start of the season we would have took it," Lowe said.

"It's quite difficult to get people in at this time of the year but we are very close on someone so hopefully we can get that over the line," Lowe said.
