Kai Forbath booted a field goal in the dying seconds as the Washington Redskins stunned Philadelphia 27-24 on Saturday, dealing the Eagles' playoff hopes a serious blow.
Forbath kicked a 26-yard field goal with just five seconds left in regulation for the Redskins who snapped a six-game National Football League losing skid in front of a crowd of close to 80,000 at FedEx Field.
Philadelphia have lost three straight games since a US Thanksgiving holiday win at Dallas gave it sole possession of first place in the NFC East.
A win at home by the Cowboys against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday would eliminate the Eagles from playoff contention.
The Redskins weren't the only ones celebrating after their victory. The other big winner on Saturday were the Detroit Lions who clinched a playoff spot due to the Eagles' loss.
Quarterback Robert Griffin threw a short pass inside the two minute warning to Pierre Garcon, who slipped past a defender for a 23-yard gain.
A roughing-the-passer penalty added another 15 yards and the Redskins tacked on another first down, forcing the Eagles to use each of their three remaining timeouts before Forbath kicked the go-ahead field goal.
"You cherish those moments when you can go out and lead your team to victory on that last drive," said Griffin.
Philadelphia was still in it with three seconds remaining because Forbath booted the kickoff right at Eagles Trey Burton who blocked it, giving Philadelphia possession at midfield.
Cornerback David Amerson knocked down Sanchez's pass in the end zone to end the contest.
"We put ourselves in the hole with penalties," said coach Chip Kelly. "That's on us. We had a situation to win at the end but we didn't execute."
Griffin completed 16-of-23 passes for 220 yards with one interception and Darrel Young had two one-yard touchdown runs in the third quarter for Washington.
"He competed man, I am happy for Robert," said Redskins coach Jay Gruden.
Sanchez was 37-of-50 for 374 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Riley Cooper. Tight end Zach Ertz set an Eagles franchise record with 15 catches for a career-high 115 yards.
Idle Detroit secured its first playoff berth in three years.
Detroit goes into a week 16 contest in Chicago on Sunday holding the top spot in the NFC North.
The Lions are tied with the Packers, but currently hold the tiebreaker thanks to a win over Green Bay earlier this season.
However, the two teams meet in Green Bay the final week of the season in a game that could determine the division winner.
