Refugee advocates halt Vic question time

Chanting refugee advocates have forced the brief abandonment of question time in Victorian parliament.

Refugee advocates have brought question time to a halt in Victoria's parliament, unfurling banners and calling on the state government to sever ties with Wilson Security, a company linked to the operation of immigration detention centres.

About a dozen protesters stood in the public gallery on Tuesday chanting: "We call on you to cancel your contracts with Wilson's".

The group said they were protesting at parliament because Wilson Security also guard parliament house.

Parliamentary security marched the protesters one-by-one out of the gallery past children who were also watching question time.

Most of the MPs in the lower house chamber, including Mr Andrews, left once the protest started and question time was suspended before resuming 15 minutes later.

Comment is being sought from the government.
