Refugee attacked on Manus Island

A refugee on Manus Island has suffered a head injury requiring hospital treatment following an attack in the community.

The immigration department has confirmed a refugee suffered a head injury in an assault out in the community on Manus Island.

A Senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Monday was told Papua New Guinea police have laid charges against the man's attacker.

The victim has received medical attention in hospital after he was knocked on the head.
