A young Iranian refugee on Nauru has issued an emotional plea to the Australian government as unrest grips the island.

The Nauruan government has confirmed at least 183 refugees have been arrested and locked up following days of protests.

The refugees are protesting conditions on Nauru and Australia's refusal to resettle them.

Nauru is accusing Australian refugee advocates of supporting public disorder and coaching refugees to use social media.

23-year-old refugee Sahar Ashouri says she's been on Nauru for two years along with her mother and sister.

She told Darren Mara that because of growing tensions with locals on the island, she now fears for their safety.
