Prominent refugee and asylum seeker advocates have paid tribute to the work of the the New South Wales Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS).
STARTTS helps refugees deal with their past experiences and build a new life in Australia and is marking its 25th year in service.
The STARTTS Refugee Ball in Sydney last night heard from refugees, councilors and advocates who recalled their own stories and those of refugees who've used the service.
Liberal Senator Michaelia Cash says governments need organisations like STARTTS to provide much-needed services.
"Government always have a role when in comes to refugees and people coming into this country. But at the end of the day government can only do so much and then we rely on agencies like STARTTS to literally offer the on-the-ground services to people who've suffered from torture and trauma," Ms Cash said.
