Federal politics shouldn't affect the decisions of NSW voters, Liberal MP Malcolm Turnbull said as he cast his election vote in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

The federal communications minister voted in the state election on Saturday morning at Double Bay Public School in the seat of Vaucluse.

Mr Turnbull's appearance came as Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who had cast a pre-poll vote, was in Melbourne addressing the Victorian Liberal Party State Council and attending a national security committee of cabinet to discuss aviation safety.

Mr Turnbull dismissed concerns that a backlash against the prime minister would be reflected in NSW votes.

"This is a state election. The only question today is - who do you want to govern NSW for the next four years?" he told AAP before casting his vote.

"The only name on the ballot paper is Mike Baird's, so whatever else may be in people's minds, other issues and so forth, the only question today is who is going to govern NSW."

The polls are indicating a comfortable victory for the coalition, but Mr Turnbull also warned that voters shouldn't take anything for granted.

"The elections are always close in Australia," he said.

"We cannot afford to allow NSW to go back to the party of (controversial former NSW Labor MP) Eddie Obeid. It is absolutely critical for the future of this state and indeed for Australia that Mike Baird's Liberal team are returned to government today."
