A coroner has acknowledged the suffering experienced by the families of six of the 38 Australian citizens and residents who died on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

The plane was shot out of the sky on July 17, 2014, and a criminal investigation is continuing.

SBS reporter Alyshia Gates says relatives of the six victims from New South Wales requested a coronial hearing.
