Release boy from detention: lawyers' alliance

There are calls for the immediate release of an 11-year-old asylum seeker from the Pontville detention centre in Tasmania.

A group representing lawyers in Australia is calling for the immediate removal of an 11 year old asylum seeker from the Pontville detention centre in Tasmania.

It says to continue to keep the Sri Lankan boy in detention endangers his wellbeing, and is in breach of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Immigration Minister, Tony Burke says the boy has remained in the centre due to a shortage of community detention.

But, Director of the Australian Lawyers Alliance Greg Barns told Zara Zaher that community support for the boy in Tasmania is strong and he should be removed immediately.
