Eighteen years ago, Bosnian Serb forces committed the worst atrocity in Europe since the Second World War, killing about eight thousand Bosnian Muslim men and boys in the enclave of Srebrenica.
The area was designed as a safe-haven by the United Nations, which has subsequently declared the killings to be genocide.
Under a resolution passed by federal parliament last year, Australia named July 11 as Srebrenica Remembrance Day.
Members of the Bosnian Australian community are holding a series of commemorative events throughout the week.
29-year-old Amela Ademi, who escaped from Srebrenica as a child, was involved in organising one event in Melbourne.
