The Melbourne Renegades are chasing a target of just 81 runs after a devastating opening over from James Pattinson sparked a batting collapse by the Brisbane Heat in Tuesday night's BBL clash at Etihad Stadium.
Pattinson removed James Peirson with the first ball of the night and was on a hat-trick when he bowled Joe Burns with the next ball.
He finished the over with a double-wicket maiden, and even worse was to come for the Heat.
Bangladeshi import Shakib Al Hasan was looking for a hat-trick of his own in the fifth over when he dismissed Dan Christian and Jason Floros in successive balls to have the visitors floundering at 4-32.
Al Hasan finished with figures of 4-13 and Pattinson, who went for 22 off his second over, had to settle for 2-23 from his three overs.
Ben Cutting top-scored for the Heat with 30 runs from 35 balls, but he became Al Hasan's fourth victim when he was bowled in the 16th over.
Former England captain Andrew Flintoff was unable to back up his last innings of 46 after he was run out following a mix up with Cutting that left him stranded at the wrong end of the pitch.
The Renegades will be looking to claim the win in quick fashion as they look to keep their slim finals hopes alive.
Rohrer, who took over the captaincy with Aaron Finch now with the Australian one-day side, was relieved to have kept his team's season alive on a tricky wicket.
"When you're chasing a small total like that, everyone expects you to just go out there and knock it off, but it wasn't the easiest wicket in the world," Rohrer told Network Ten.
"We lost a couple of early wickets trying to be positive and that's what happens."
The Renegades still need some help from other results, but must beat the Strikers at Etihad Stadium on January 19 to have any hope of making the finals.
"We've got quite a long break so we'll just rest up over the next few days," Rohrer said.
"Then we'll get back into training and do exactly what we did for this game.
"We'll focus on our own stuff rather than the opposition."
