A bushfire in Victoria's north has flared up in stronger afternoon winds, and a new warning has been issued urging residents to leave.

Residents in Nurrabiel and Mockinya were told on Tuesday afternoon that leaving was their safest option because conditions could get worse very quickly.

The bushfire, northeast of Balmoral, is not under control and has burnt about 1590 hectares since it was caused by lightning on Saturday.

There has been a breakout in the northeast section of the fire, with spotting occurring into private land, the CFA says.

Residents who left their homes after an emergency warning was issued on Monday have been asked to stay away despite the warning being downgraded late on Monday.

Those who stayed have been told to remain vigilant and enact their fire plans.

Three other fires continue in the Little Desert state park, covering about 4000ha, and have been contained.
