Former Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell could be on the verge of AFL retirement, according to media reports.

On the same day that St Kilda star Lenny Hayes announced his impending retirement, it emerged that Maxwell's future is also up in the air.

The leader of Collingwood's defence suffered another ankle injury in the big Sunday loss to Essendon.

Maxwell will apparently consult a specialist on Wednesday morning before deciding his next move.

Sunday's match was his first since suffering a calf injury in round 11.

There was speculation about Maxwell's future at the start of the season, but he quelled that talk with some strong performances before the calf problem.

The 31-year-old has played 208 senior games since his 2004 debut.

He captained Collingwood's 2010 premiership team.
