An international conference is being held this week in Queenscliff in Victoria, for researchers to share information about the health of the world's wetlands.

Wetlands are areas of the Earth covered by water for all or most of the year.

Conference convenor Professor Peter Gell from the University of Ballarat says the aim is to highlight the significance of wetlands in reducing the impacts of floods, absorbing pollutants and improving water quality.

He spoke to Zara Zaher about the benefits of conserving Australian wetlands.
