Residents return after Vic shed explosion

Residents who were evacuated after a massive blaze at a petrol station in Victoria have been allowed to return home, but the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Residents evacuated after an explosive fire at a petrol station in regional Victoria have been allowed to return home, but the cause of the blaze remains unknown.

Up to 50 residents were evacuated from their homes after hundreds of gas cylinders stored in a shed on the Drysdale property caught fire and exploded on Thursday morning.

The CFA was able to bring the blaze under control in four and a half hours.

No one was injured, however there was "significant" damage to the petrol station.

"The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage but we will be conducting an investigation sometime today," Country Fire Authority operations manager Wayne Aylmer said.

"Eight trucks including seven fuel tankers were destroyed as well hundreds of LPG cylinders."

The gas cylinders exploded into the air, and firefighters will use a drone to track down missing canisters.

Drysdale resident Wendy told 3AW Radio she was shaking after seeing the blaze.

"To see all this fire, flames, just down the road from us billowing smoke, you know, just thick black, and then ... gas cylinders burning and exploding," she said.

Investigators are at the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
