Resignation 'best outcome': Carmody

Queensland Justice Tim Carmody says he has no regrets and is looking forward to his new job after resigning as the state's chief justice.

Queensland Justice Tim Carmody has spoken publicly about his resignation as the state's top judge, saying he has no regrets.

"I think that it's the best outcome in the circumstances," he told the Seven Network on Friday.

Justice Carmody quit as the state's chief justice on Wednesday, almost a year after his controversial appointment by the LNP and following months of bitter infighting in the judiciary.

He will remain a Supreme Court judge and serve as a supplementary member of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT), with a view to becoming its president.

"I'm just looking forward to performing my new role as best I can and things will unfold hopefully as they should," Justice Carmody said.

He publicly offered to resign on "just terms" on May 24 to end months of judicial infighting.

But he wouldn't be drawn on whether the judges who criticised him should go as well.

"It's probably best I don't say what I think about those sort of things, that's for other people to work out for themselves," he said.

The Queensland government will consult widely and take its time choosing Justice Carmody's replacement who will come from the state's Supreme Court or Court of Appeal.

Earlier on Friday, Shadow attorney-general Ian Walker said interstate and lower court judges, barristers and solicitors should also be considered for the role, even though many may not have any experience holding court.

"What this government is doing is ruling out everybody in Australia, bar 27 people, as our next chief justice. That's a crazy thing to do," he said.

"They should be making the search as wide as possible to ensure they get the best person possible," he said.
