Rest of AFL season excites Saints coach

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson says the 16th-placed AFL side might be battling, but the rest of the season will be no grind.

It's looking like a long season for long-suffering St Kilda supporters, but coach Alan Richardson doesn't want it to end any time soon.

The Saints were competitive for three quarters before being blown away by Collingwood in an 86-point loss on Friday night at Etihad Stadium.

St Kilda are 3-7 and 16th on the ladder as they approach the halfway point of a season that had promised little and delivered limited hope for fans.

Richardson conceded player development was a focus for the Saints, but denied their campaign would become a grind as the losses stacked up.

"It won't be a challenge (to finish the season off)," he said.

"It will be a fantastic opportunity for young players to start and build careers - for guys that aren't in the team at the moment like Tommy Lee.

"There's going to be some real opportunities and that's the space we're in. We need to get games into our young players."

Richardson nominated Seb Ross, Brodie Murdoch, Cameron Shenton and Luke Dunstan as some of the youngsters to impress against the Magpies.

"Individually, there's some real positives," he said of the heavy defeat.

Luke Delaney injured his hip and is in doubt for the side's intimidating clash with table-topping Port Adelaide next Saturday at Adelaide Oval.

"We'll do whatever we can to get him up," Richardson said.

"He's really important. It's probably about a 50-50 (chance of Delaney playing)."
