A resurgent Jason Day is confident he can contend for his first win of the year at the season's final event after a strong performance in the BMW Championship in Chicago.
Former world No.1 Day extended a sequence of good results when he finished fourth on Sunday, seven shots behind countryman Marc Leishman, who won by five strokes from Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose.
Day's fifth top-10 result of the year follows a tie for ninth at the US PGA Championship in August, as well as a share of sixth at the Northern Trust and a top-25 at TPC Boston two weeks ago.
The late charge has lifted Day to 15th in the FedEx standings, meaning he is in with an outside chance of winning the $US10 million bonus prize at this week's season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta.
"The game is right there; I'm making a lot of birdies and a lot of eagles. If I can just tidy up the silly little errors, I'll be right there at Tour Champs," said Day.
Day parted indefinitely with long-time caddie Colin Swatton on tournament eve, opting to put close mate Luke Reardon on the bag for the 70-man event he won in 2015.
"Overall, it was a decent tournament. My main goal was to try and get into the Tour Championship to give myself a shot and I did that," said Day.
"If I had to pick, I would rather win (the Tour Championship) than this week."
Day has endured a tumultuous season, surrendering a 47-week stint as world No.1 to Dustin Johnson in February while dealing with mother Dening's lung cancer diagnosis.
Winless since May 2016, the Ohio-based Queenslander said advancing to the 30-man Tour Championship seemed insurmountable earlier in the year.
"Halfway through my season, I didn't even think I was going to get to Atlanta, so I'm very happy about that," said Day.
