The federal government has introduced legislation paring back the renewable energy target to a bipartisan target of 33,000 gigawatt hours.
Environment Minister Greg Hunt said the bill would address problems identified with the original target of 41,000 GWh, which he described as an "unachievable" goal.
"This new target ... gives industry an opportunity to grow," he told parliament on Wednesday.
