A government backbencher has suggested citizenship should be revoked for those who don't share Australian values or follow local laws.
Outspoken Nationals MP George Christensen used a late-night address to parliament to denounce modern multiculturalism and call for a refocus on citizenship.
He touched on government plans to to strip Australian citizenship from dual nationals fighting with terror groups.
"Perhaps the debate should include those who fight against Australia without leaving our shores," he told the lower house on Wednesday.
The Queensland MP nominated those who did not share democratic beliefs, those who refused to obey Australian laws and instead that of a foreign land, or sought to replace it with Sharia law.
He mentioned a number of headlines involving Muslims, including a child bride in an Islamic marriage and a Muslim convert "whipped" under Sharia punishment.
Islamic leaders weren't doing enough to condemn these acts and blaming unemployment on disengaged youths wasn't a reasonable excuse, Mr Christensen said.
"How do we get to a place where we not only allow, but encourage beliefs, customs and actions that could be regarded as un-Australian at best and treason at worst?" he said.
