Two days ago, Mr Purvinas said that, "If I was a person considering travel over the period up until Christmas I'd probably be looking at airlines other than Qantas. If I was a passenger I wouldn't be purchasing a ticket with them at this stage."
The ALAEA is just one of a number of unions either striking, or threatening strike action in an attempt to secure jobs.
But Mr Purvinas' comments have outraged not just Qantas, but the broader community as well.
If there is a boycott of Qantas, and the company fails, so too does all of its 35,000 employees.
The airline is one of Austraila's largest employers.
Martin Ferguson, a former trade union official, says Mr Purvinas' comments, were Un-Australian.
