Ricciardo salvages F1 podium in Singapore

Daniel Ricciardo hopes the mechanical issues that prevented him from finishing higher than third at the Singapore GP will be fixed by next round in Japan.

Daniel Ricciardo is hopeful the mechanical issues that hampered his efforts in Singapore will be resolved before next month's Japanese Grand Prix.

The Australian salvaged a third-place finish at the Marina Bay circuit on Sunday after his Red Bull suffered a battery malfunction on lap one and throughout the night race.

"We definitely had a few issues and we tried fixing them but, to be honest, we didn't quite clear it all up," Ricciardo said.

"I was a bit frustrated, a bit concerned as well that we wouldn't get it to the flag, but luckily it held on.

"I guess it did cost us a bit today.

"We'll just have look at it and I'm sure we'll fix it for Japan."

The resultant lack of power stopped Ricciardo from getting the better of teammate Sebastian Vettel, who crossed the line just 0.7secs in front to finish runner-up behind Mercedes' new championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

"Obviously it was nice to get on the back of Seb and try to put him under a bit of pressure, but I think for all of us here it was follow-the-leader a bit and not much else to do," he said.

With the help of Nico Rosberg's early retirement, Ricciardo's seventh podium of the season has lifted him to within 60 points of Hamilton on the overall drivers' standings.

Reigning four-time champion Vettel now sits 117 points adrift of the lead, with a maximum 150 available across the remaining five races.

Some pundits claim Red Bull should've imposed team orders in Singapore and allowed Ricciardo to switch places with Vettel for an extra three points in the title race.

But team boss Christian Horner said such a move would've been "wrong".

"If there was a realistic chance of Daniel winning and Sebastian was mathematically out of the championship, then we'd do the best we can for the team," Horner said.

"But ... with the situation we're in at the moment, it's a long shot.

"Both of them are still just in it, and both have taken a chunk of points out of Nico.

"Daniel, okay he's conceded three points to Seb, but is that going to make the difference?

"That's impossible to say with a crystal ball at this stage, but at the moment it doesn't make sense to interfere with team orders."

The next race is at Suzuka on October 5.
