Fiery quick Kane Richardson is well aware he can't afford to waste his chances after being selected in the Australian ODI squad to face India.
The 24-year-old South Australian has played eight ODIs and two international Twenty20 fixtures but struggled to hold his spot, last representing his country in November 2014.
Richardson's prospects of a recall dwindled when he was overlooked for Australia A's winter tour of India last year, an event he says strengthened his resolve.
"Missing out on the Australia A tour was probably a bit of a kick in the backside," he said on Monday.
"It made me work a little harder here, knowing I was falling out of favour I guess.
"Being 24, I didn't think my time had passed. That's just the way it goes sometimes and it'll be the same this time. If I don't perform then someone else will overtake me."
The tall seamer will take leave from his Big Bash League duties with the Adelaide Strikers after they face the Perth Scorchers on Tuesday.
His national recall follows a standout performance for the Redbacks in the Matador Cup, where he led the attack and specialised bowling at the death.
"I think I just took a lot of confidence out of doing well there," he said.
"That's probably why I got picked I guess. I'll be trying to remember what I did well there and take that moving forward."
Richardson was one of three quicks named for the first three games of the five-match series, alongside prospective debutants Scott Boland and Joel Paris,
The series starts at the WACA on January 12.
