Former Labor senator Graham Richardson's recovery from major surgery continues in a positive vein but the now-pundit could not escape politics even in immediate stages of his journey back to health.

Richardson underwent marathon 18-hour surgery to remove four organs on Wednesday and his Sky television co-presenter Alan Jones says he is conscious, breathing on his own and was able to respond when asked the names of his wife and son.

"Richo was then asked the name of the prime minister... he responded with a smile," Jones told 2GB listeners on Friday.
