Richo recovering from cancer surgery

Graham Richardson is recovering in hospital after a marathon 18-hour operation to remove several major organs.

Former Labor senator Graham Richardson is recovering from a marathon 18-hour surgery to remove four organs.

The 66-year-old former politician-turned-commentator underwent surgery to remove his bowel, bladder, prostate, rectum and sciatic nerve on Wednesday as part of his cancer treatment.

Sky News Australia boss Angelos Frangopoulos on Thursday tweeted that Mr Richardson, who appears on the pay TV channel's Richo and Jones program, was recovering.

"Richo out of surgery. Op lasted nearly 18 hours. Next 24-48 hours vital. Family says: `Thanks for support.'"

Surgeons began operating on the former Keating and Hawke government minister around 0800 AEST on Wednesday, and were still going at midnight, Mr Frangopoulos said in an earlier tweet.

Mr Richardson had been upbeat on the eve of the surgery, telling Richo and Jones viewers on Tuesday night: "Don't worry - as the Terminator says - `I'll be back'."

He also told of how he will be forced to rely on a bladder bag and a colostomy bag, as well as a walking stick, after the operation.

"I'm going to have two bags, which is not something that everyone would like but that's the way it's going to go," he told co-presenter Alan Jones.
