Australia's worst pedophile priest Gerald Francis Ridsdale will give evidence at a royal commission into Catholic clergy abuse in Ballarat.

Ridsdale will give evidence via videolink from jail during the three-week hearing which began on Tuesday in the Victorian regional city.

Ridsdale has been convicted for abusing more than 50 children over three decades dating back from when he was ordained in 1961.

Another Ballarat priest Paul David Ryan, who has been convicted of three charges of indecent assault against one victim in Victoria, gave evidence during a private hearing. The transcript will be tendered to the public hearing.
