Right call over Marsh dismissal: Hesson

Black Caps coach Mike Hesson says the right decision was made in Australian Mitch Marsh's dismissal during the deciding one-day international.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson believes the right call was made in Australian batsman Mitch Marsh's contentious dismissal in the deciding one-dayer in Hamilton.

New Zealand's 55-run victory on Monday was overshadowed by the way danger man Marsh was given out, which left the tourists still needing 83 runs with just four wicket left.

The allrounder was adjudged caught and bowled by paceman Matt Henry after the replay was shown on the big screen and the crowd erupted, leading the umpires to refer the incident to the TV official.

Marsh, who scored 41, was livid as he walked off and the stump microphones picked up a heated exchange between Marsh's batting partner, Matthew Wade, and Black Cap Grant Elliott.

Hesson said an issue had been made of the Black Caps making no appeal, which was incorrect.

"Four of our players appealed at the time," he said.

"We performed our task which is asking the question. Sure there was a delay, but in the end the right decision was made."

Hesson said the issue didn't continue off the field afterwards and he described relations between the two teams as "always pretty good".

"It's No.1 and 2 in the world," he said of Australia and New Zealand's respective one-day rankings.

"There's always going to be a little bit of niggle. Both teams are pretty desperate to do well. I think it's just trans-Tasman rivalry, isn't it?"

McCullum said after the match that the right decision had been made even if the process "was far from ideal".

Australian skipper Steve Smith said there was no doubt Marsh was out, but said the process needed improving.
