France's Olympic champion Teddy Riner once again claimed the world title in the 100kg category at the world championships in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

Guadeloupe-born Riner beat Brazil's Rafael Silva by ippon in the final to claim his fifth world gold in the category and his sixth overall, to go with the Olympic gold he won in London last year.

His first world title was also won in Rio, in 2007, when he was aged just 18.

This triumph is arguably his sweetest yet, coming as it does after a difficult 12 months since the Olympics, in which he struggled with his weight and with injuries, including to his left shoulder, which kept him out from April until June.

Unbeaten in three years, he will now hope to triumph in Rio once again at the 2016 Olympics.

Germany's Andreas Toelzer and Faicel Jaballah of Tunisia took the bronze medals.

Meanwhile, Elkhan Mammadov of Azerbaijan won gold in the half-heavyweight under-100kg category, defeating Henk Grol of the Netherlands in the final.

Bronze mendals went to Lukas Krpalek of the Czech Republic and Dimitri Peters of Germany.

In the sole women's final of the day, Olympic champion Idalys Ortiz of Cuba won the over 78kg title, beating Maria Suelen Altheman of Brazil, as Jung Eun Lee of South Korea and Megumi Tachimoto of Japan claimed the bronze medals.
