Rio 2016: Bronze for Australia in the pool

Australia has won it's second bronze medal of day four with Emma McKeon coming third int he women's 200 metres freestyle.

Swimming

Emma McKeon has won bronze in the women's 200 metre freestyle.

She was beated by a strong swim from American swimming star Katie Ledecky and Sweden's Sarah Sjorstrom.

Bronte Barratt came in fifth in a personal best time.

Alicia Coutts finished fifth in the 200 metres individual medley. Rio will be her final Olympics.

The Australian men's 4x200 metres freestyle relay team has finished fourth in the final behind the United States who powered home to win Michael Phelps his 21st gold medal.

Phelps also won the men's 200 metres butterfly on Wednesday night.

Star swimmer Cameron McEvoy withdrew from the team, which featured Thomas Fraser-Holmes, David McKeon, Daniel Smith and Mack Horton.

Kyle Chalmers and Cameron McEvoy have both qualified for the men's 100 metres freestyle final to be held on Thursday.

Favourite McEvoy qualified third behind teen sensation Kyle Chalmers who qualified second behind American Nathan Adrian.

Madeline Groves and Brianna Throssell have qualified first and seventh for the women's 200 metres butterfly final, also to be held on Thursday.

Equestrian eventing

Australia has come away from the equestrian team eventing with a bronze medal, despite entering the show jumping round in the gold medal position.

Rider Christopher Burton had a chance to clinch the gold for the Australians with a clean jumping round but clipped two rails, allowing France to take the gold and Germany the silver.

Eventing is a three-phased sport including dressage, cross country and show jumping.

New Zealand, who were in the running for silver after the cross country, slipped to fourth after seven-time Olympian Mark Todd knocked three rails down.

Football

The Matildas are through to the quarter finals after defeating Zimbabwe 6-1.

After losing to Canada and drawing with Germany, the women's team managed to score a goal in the first two minutes.

They followed it up with a second from a penalty corner at the 14 minute mark and a third towards the end of the second half.

The Matildas also started the second half strongly scoring two quick goals followed by a third.

Zimbabwe finally scored at full time as five minutes of injury time began.

Rowing

Kim Brennan has her Olympic rowing gold medal hopes back on track with an emphatic win in the quarter-finals of the women's single scull.

Brennan posted the fastest times of the three races at Lagoa Stadium on Tuesday, pipping American Genevra Stone and Kiwi threat Emma Twigg.

It was a return to form for Brennan, who faltered in the wind and waves in the heats on day one of racing to finish third, which was her first loss in the event since 2014.

Brennan, who celebrated her birthday on Tuesday, led from start to finish.

"It was good to get a solid row out and it didn't end up being too hard in the end," Brennan said.

Earlier Australia's men's single sculler Rhys Grant finished second in his quarter-final to also move through to Thursday's semi-finals.

The men's pair of Spencer Turrin and Alex Lloyd booked their berth in the medal race, crossing second in their semi-final with their final on Thursday.

The women's double scull crew of Sally Kehoe and Genevieve Horton faded to finish fourth in their semi-final, missing the final, as did the men's double David Watts and Chris Morgan.

Hockey

The Kookaburras have lost to Belgium 1-0 in their third pool match.

At quarter time the score was locked at nil all but early in the second quarter Belgium slipped one past the keeper to make the score 1-0.

Australia fought hard but was unable to find an equaliser.

The men's team lost to Spain on Monday 1-2 after beating New Zealand 2-1 in the opening match.

The Hockeyroos will face India on Thursday and the Kookaburras will face Great Britain.

Tennis

Samantha Stosur has lost her third round match to Germany's Angelique Kerber.

Stosur lost the first set 0-6 to but rallied in the second set, forcing the score to 5-7 against the world number two.

She was the final Australian in the Rio tennis competition.

Boxing

Boxer Daniel Jason Lewis has won his first bout in his Olympic debut, beating Poland's Tomasz Jablonski 2-1 on points.

Lewis lost the first round but then won the second and third rounds to take out the bout.

Australia's Shelley Marie Watts will face Italy's Irma Testa on Friday in the preliminaries of the women's lightweight division.

Archery

Australia's Taylor Worth has made it through to the final 16 in the men's archery, defeating Venezuela's Elias Malave. 

He will return on Friday to shoot for the final eight and the semi-finals and finals.

Fellow Australian Alec Potts lost to Brazil's Bernado Oliveira in his first round.

Ryan Tyack will compete in his first round on Thursday.

Basketball

The Opals have won their third straight match, beating France 89-71.

Captain Penny Taylor played a blinder of a game, scoring 31 points with five rebounds and nine assists.

Rugby Sevens

The men's rugby sevens team has won its second match of the Oympics against Spain, beating them 26-12.

The team lost its first match against France 31-14.

Australia will play South Africa on Thursday.

Sonny Bill Williams' Olympics are over after partially rupturing his Achilles tendon while playing for New Zealand against Japan.

Japan went on to stun the gold medal-favoured All Blacks 14-12.

The All Blacks will play Kenya later today, Australian time.

Water polo

The Australian women have beaten the Russian team 14-4 in their second preliminary round match.

The men's team will face Japan tomorrow morning, Australian time while the women will go up against Italy on Thursday.

Sailing

Australian sailor Tom Burton is sitting in fourth place after four rounds of the men's laser race.

Ashley Stoddard is currently sitting in 14th place after four rounds of the women's laser radial race.

Both sailors will compete in 10 races before the medal race.

Finn sailor Jake Lilley had a rough first day, receiving a penalty in the second race of the day.

He is currently sitting in 19th with eight races still to go.

Judo

Australia's Katharina Haecker won her first round of the women's 63 kilogram judo.

However she was knocked out in the next round by Japan's Miku Tashiro.

Eoin Coughlan was lost his first round of the men's 81 kilogram judo to South Korea's Seungsu Lee.
