Tonight runner Peter Bol is chasing history.
The 22-year old began racing competitively just five years ago.
His speed and natural talent earning him Olympic selection in a competitive field of four male runners who set a qualifying time for the 800 metre event.
Now just hours away until his event, Bol is hoping to become Australia’s first South Sudanese-born medalist.
“Just being able to come here there's mixed emotions, a lot of emotions, a lot of excitement,” he said.
“It's been unbelievable, it's where I belong."
And he's belonged a lot of places.
Born in South Sudan, his family fled civil unrest to Egypt and was granted asylum to come to Australia.
He was 6 years old at the time.
The family moved to Perth, and he said the South Sudanese community had embraced his journey to become an Olympian.
Bol said he would be carrying the support and hopes of two nations on the track in Rio.
"Track is individual, and it's made it seem more like a team sport so it's been awesome," he said.
