'River on fire' video notches up 2m views

A video showing methane gas being set alight above the Condamine River has notched up more than two million views online.

A video showing a Greens MP lighting methane gas bubbling up from a Queensland river has notched up more than two million views online.

NSW MP Jeremy Buckingham posted the Facebook clip on Friday in which he uses a kitchen lighter to spark flames above the Condamine River.

"The fracking just a kilometre away, methane coming up and now the river is alight. Unbelievable!" he exclaims in the footage.

Origin Energy, which operates coal seam gas wells in the area, has since released a statement saying the gas is naturally occurring and poses no risk to public safety, provided people use "common sense".
