A Qantas flight bound for Melbourne has returned to Los Angeles after water was discovered leaking from a pipe on the aircraft's upper deck.

The pilot made the decision to turn QF94 back about an hour into the flight after the leak was discovered, with the Airbus A380 aircraft landing shortly after 8pm (AEST).

Hollywood actress Yvette Nicole Brown, star of the comedy TV series Community and the film (500) Days of Summer, was a passenger and described it as "scary".

The actress, who has 469,000 followers on Twitter, wrote how there was so much water it seeped through the floor of her cabin and down on passengers on the level below.
It's understood the decision to turn back to Los Angeles was made as a precaution and that there was no major issue in term of the safety of the plane or passengers.

Passengers aboard the flight were to be accommodated in Los Angeles overnight.

A Qantas spokesman confirmed to AAP on Wednesday night that the aircraft was being examined by engineers in Los Angeles and that Qantas was in contact with Airbus to establish the cause of the fault.

"A flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne has returned to LA about an hour after take off as there was a water leak on board the aircraft," the spokesman said.

The flight left Los Angeles at 11pm local time on Tuesday (1600 Wednesday AEST).

"There were no safety or flight concerns with the water leak, however the captain decided to return to LA in the interests of passenger comfort."
"Crew on board did everything they could to help customers, including moving them to unaffected areas and providing spare blankets so they could stay dry."

"We're also providing customers with hotel accommodation while the issue is being fixed by our engineers in Los Angeles."
