Australian actress Margot Robbie feels mysterious with dark hair.

The 23-year-old debuted her new brown locks on the red carpet at the 2014 Academy Awards on Sunday.

The naturally blonde star dyed her hair earlier this year to begin work on her upcoming sci-fi movie Z for Zachariah.

Robbie admits she initially found it hard to adjust to the change, but says she's now enjoying her new look.

"I did a movie and I didn't have time to go back to blonde," she told People magazine.

"I'm liking it! I'm getting used to it. I feel very mysterious as a brunette," Robbie said.

Robbie gave fans a glimpse at her brunette look with a photo on her WhoSay page in January, accompanied with the caption: "First day on set for Z! She ain't a Duchess no more. (sic)".

Her appearance differs dramatically from that during her time working on the hit film The Wolf of Wall Street, in which she plays feisty blonde Naomi opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

Robbie isn't in a rush to go back to her lighter colour.

"I might not dye it back right away.

"I'll wait until I know what my next movie is," she said.

The Australian star has quickly made a name for herself in the fashion world since her Wolf of Wall street role. Robbie was snapped in the front row at Paris Fashion Week earlier this week.

Robbie joined other stars, including Hollywood's newest darling Lupita Nyong'o and Rihanna, at the Miu Miu runway show on Wednesday.
