Robinson performs at World cross country

Brett Robinson and Victoria Mitchell led the Australian charge at the world cross-country championships in China.

Dual national champion Brett Robinson has continued his career-best run of form by leading the Australian charge at the world cross-country championships in China.

Robinson has enjoyed his best domestic season, capped by gold medals in the national 5000m and 10,000m title races.

The 24-year-old clocked a time of 37 minutes and 11 seconds to finish 28th in the 12km men's cross-country race in Guiyang on Saturday which was won by Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor in 34:52.

African runners again dominated both senior races, filling the top 21 places in the men's event and the first 14 in the women's 8km event.

Australian Victoria Mitchell's decision to skip the national athletics titles in Brisbane to compete at the world cross-country championships paid off.

She was the first Australian home in 40th place, two spots clear of young compatriot Courtney Powell, who crossed the line in 42nd spot with blood streaming from a cut on her forehead after she fell down the stairs at the team hotel the previous night.

Mitchell has already bettered the world championships qualifying standard for the 3000m steeplechase, as has Madeline Heiner.

Kenyan Agnes Tirop won the women's world cross-country title in a time of 26:01.
