Tom Rockliff has been named as the new captain of the Brisbane Lions.

The 24-year-old replaces Jed Adcock in the role following a player vote and a selection process that also involved coaches, physical performance staff and the AFL club's chief executive Greg Swann.

"To be chosen to lead a club with such a proud history and with such a great bunch of talented young players is simply awesome," Rockliff told the club's website.

"The Lions have shown an enormous amount of faith in me over the years and I want to continue to repay that by leading this group to success.

"We have something special building here, you can feel it on the field and off it. We all know the work that needs to be done and we are on that journey together."

Adcock, who shared captaincy duties with Jonathan Brown in 2013 before assuming the role on his own last year, will take on a mentoring role with the Lions' younger players.

Rockliff's elevation to the top job comes as part of a generational change at the club, with Daniel Rich, Pearce Hanley and Dayne Zorko - all aged 26 or under - also named as vice-captains.

Rockliff, selected fifth overall at the 2009 pre-season draft, has played 101 games for the Lions and received All Australian honours for the first time last year.

Lions' coach Justin Leppitsch said the two-time club champion was an obvious choice.

"One thing with Tom, you know what you are going to get," Leppitsch said.

"He loves this club and he is passionate about what we are trying to do here.

"You have seen his development as a player and as a person over recent years and he is more than ready to take on this responsibility of leading this group."

Rockliff signed a new three-year contract with the club at the beginning of last season.
