Rodgers speeds to year's fastest 100

Mike Rodgers has clocked the fastest 100m this year at the US track and field championships.

Veteran American sprinter Mike Rodgers cruised to the year's fastest 100m metres when the 33-year-old clocked 9.89 seconds in qualifying at the US track and field championships in Iowa on Thursday.

The performance stole the show from the younger generation of sprinters on the first day of the meeting that will decide the US team for next month's Athletics World Cup in London.

Talented 20-year-old Noah Lyles had the second fastest time of 9.92, but unlike Rodgers, his run was wind-assisted, coming with an aiding wind of 3.4 metres per second.

Two others broke 10 seconds on the fast track at Drake University in Des Moines.

Isiah Young won his heat in 9.93 while Cameron Burrell recorded the same time in finishing behind Rodgers.

The previous best time for the year was 9.91 by Britain's Zharnel Hughes.
