Rodionova drawing positive from Open loss

Australians Arina Rodionova and Ajla Tomljanovic have been bundled out in the second round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

Arina Rodionova is targeting a spot in the world's top 100 after her promising grand slam season came to an end with a second-round US Open defeat.

Australia's only first-round winner at Wimbledon, Rodionova was philosophical after falling 7-5 6-3 to Greece's Maria Sakkari at the same stage in New York.

"It's obviously quite upsetting when you have chances but it is what it is," she said.

"I've had a pretty good season. I'm going to have my career-best ranking again after this week, so there's a lot of positives.

"Although it's pretty touchy to think about it right now, hopefully tomorrow it's another day and I'll try and take some positives out of today's match."

The 27-year-old is projected to rise to 119th in the rankings and knows breaking into the top 100 will secure her main-draw entries to the grand slams.

The Melburnian successfully qualified for Wimbledon and the US Open.

"That's my goal for the rest of the year. I'm going to go to China for six weeks or so and try to get it done," Rodionova said.

"I guess I'll have to play until it happens."

While it's been a successful season for Rodionova, it's been a stressful time for her AFL-playing husband Ty Vickery.

The Hawthorn forward has been swept up in an extortion scandal with former Richmond teammate Jake King, who has been charged with multiple counts including threats to kill, while his Hawks missed the finals for the first time in eight years.

But Vickery will escape the Melbourne glare to join his wife during her Asian swing.

"I'm just lucky my husband will be able to join me for a few weeks or so now that football is coming to an end," Rodionova said.

"A few more weeks for him so he will be able to travel with me, which will make it easier."

Fellow Australian Ajla Tomljanovic also lost her second-round match on Wednesday, going down 6-3 6-2 to Serb Aleksandra Krunic.

"I just wasn't really great from the beginning," Tomljanovic said.

"I never really found the game to be successful against her."
