Roeger wins bronze at Para champs

South Australian Michael Roeger is aiming for another medal after winning bronze at the Paralympic world athletics championships.

Two-time Paralympian Michael Roeger has won the bronze medal in the 5000m for arm amputees at the Paralympic athletics world championships in Lyon.

It was the South Australian's first 5000m race at an international championship and his first major medal, and he's eyeing off another in the 1500m later in the meeting.

"To come away with a bronze medal is a great result," Roeger said.

"My preferred 1500m is still around the corner and this is the ultimate warm up, a real confidence boost."

Roeger led early, but was hauled in by Algerian Samir Nouioua and Brazil's Alex Pires.

Nouioua won in a time of 15 minutes 9.92 seconds, while Roeger broke the Oceania record with his 15:13.98.

Veteran Victorian Russell Short finished fourth in the shot put for athletes with visual impairments, with a best of 13.99m, well adrift of Ukranian gold medallist Andrii Holivets who heaved 15.52m.
