Rogers failure caps Test batting yips

Australia's Test batsmen warming up at Bellerive in the Sheffield Shield clash between Tasmania and Victoria have had little practice for the Ashes.

A double failure from Chris Rogers capped an ordinary day for Australia's Test batsmen warming up in the Sheffield Shield match at Bellerive.

Rogers was out for 11 in Victoria's second innings after making just three in his first dig of the clash with Tasmania.

The 36-year-old had come into the match in superb form after making 117 and 88 in his previous game against NSW.

But he played on and was bowled by a delivery from Tigers paceman Adam Maher late on day three to leave the visitors 1-33, a lead of 166, at stumps.

Victoria claimed first innings points when they bowled Tasmania out for 250 in reply to their own 383.

Ashes squad members George Bailey and James Faulkner also got limited practice batting for the Tigers ahead of the series opener against England at the Gabba.

Bailey, who will make his Test debut, made 37 and allrounder Faulkner just 14.

The Australian Twenty20 captain at least faced 91 balls, hitting five fours, before chipping Dan Christian to short midwicket.

Faulkner, batting at No.6, faced 43 deliveries before he was bowled by Christian.

Bailey would have been hoping for more after being involved in a disastrous run-out with Alex Doolan (41).

The skipper left his teammate stranded after calling a quick single on the final ball before lunch.

Making matters worse, it was widely considered Bailey had pipped the in-form Doolan to make the Ashes squad earlier this week.

Tim Paine, who made an unbeaten 66, said Bailey had made the most of a tough situation.

"A run-out at any time always affects the mood of teams a little bit but it's how you deal with it," he said.

"George went back out and at least stuck at it and tried to get his innings going.

"It didn't quite work but that's the way it goes."

Rob Quiney will resume on 19 with Peter Handscomb two as the Bushrangers look to set a target and force an outright win on a wearing pitch.

"We've driven the game the whole three days so we'll be looking forward to getting six points," Christian said.
