Darren Lehmann is confident Chris Rogers will be fit to play his final innings in Australia, after he injured his back during the fourth Test against India at the SCG on Thursday.

Rogers, 37, left the field at 11.43am, with the problem and didn't return for the rest of the third day.

"He just had some back spasms there," the Australia coach said.

"He should be alright for tomorrow."

The stubborn left-hander scored 95 on the opening day, but wasn't called upon again until after tea on day two after Australia's declaration.

If Rogers doesn't return to play in the Sydney match, it would be a sad end for what he has said will likely be his last Test on home soil.

Rogers had indicated he is likely to retire after this year's Ashes series in England.

India were 5-342 at stumps on day three, with Virat Kohli on 140 and Wriddhiman Saha on 14 in reply to Australia's first innings total of 7-572 declared.
