Melbourne Victory are confident Socceroo midfielder Tom Rogic will be fit for Saturday's A-League derby despite an ankle sprain in their 4-3 win over Adelaide United.

Rogic left the field in extreme discomfort four minutes into the second half after being stepped on accidentally by teammate Leigh Broxham.

Scans on Sunday morning revealed Rogic had suffered a lateral sprain, ruling him out of the Victory's mid-week trip to China to play Guangzhou Evergrande in their Asian Champions League group stage opener.

He will stay in Melbourne for treatment, as the club look to build on an improved record since two calamitous 5-0 losses at the end of January.

Coach Kevin Muscat said he had the utmost faith in the Victory's backroom team to get Rogic back on the pitch.

"We've got a very competent medical staff and, if there's any chance of him being available, he will because they'll get him right," Muscat said.

The absence of any long-term injury fears is good news to Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou, having lost winger Robbie Kruse and wing-back Rhys Williams to long-term injuries and with captain Lucas Neill still clubless.

While Rogic was the obvious sore point in an otherwise euphoric win for the Victory, Muscat will also be without Pablo Contreras for Saturday's derby with Melbourne Heart with the Chilean picking up another yellow card.

Despite that headache, Muscat wasn't going to let it ruin his night.

"What a game of football - we won 4-3. There was some excellent goals from both teams tonight; let's focus on that."
