Roma's Ljajic back in Serbian soccer squad

Roma's Adem Ljajic has been reinstated in Serbia's national soccer squad nearly two years after being ousted for refusing to sing the national anthem.

Serbia's interim coach Ljubinko Drulovic on Monday returned Roma's midfielder Adem Ljajic to the national squad nearly two years after previous coach Sinisa Mihajlovic ousted him over his refusal to sing the national anthem.

A Serbian Muslim, Ljajic did not sing the anthem before Serbia's friendly against Spain in May 2012. Mihajlovic was incensed and expelled him from the team.

But Drulovic has included him in the squad that is set to play a friendly in Ireland on March 5.

Appointed interim coach earlier this month, Drulovic said he would not ask players to sing the anthem, but to "give the best they have" on the pitch.

Mihajlovic departed in November to take over Sampdoria in Italy's Serie A.

Serbia failed to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil and, on Sunday, were drawn with Portugal, Denmark, Armenia and Albania for Euro 2016 qualifying.
