Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney says Russia's slide away from democracy and its frayed relationships with international peers threaten to undercut the spirit of the Olympic games it hosts next month.
Romney, who led 2002's Winter Games in Salt Lake City, told Fox News Sunday that he also worries about security preparations but predicts Russian President Vladimir Putin has done everything he can to prevent violence at the Sochi games.
Romney, whose Republican bid against President Barack Obama came up short in 2012, says he doesn't think any major event is free from the threat of violence.
Last week, twin suicide bombings in the Russian city of Volgograd left 34 dead.
Romney says that Russia has a special problem given the threats that have been levelled.
