North Melbourne's Sudanese sensation Majak Daw will be out of AFL action for six months because of knee surgery.

The Kangaroos announced that Daw was to have a posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction on Friday afternoon.

They said the ruckman had been nursing a knee injury throughout the season.

The 22-year-old Sudanese refugee made his long-awaited AFL debut in round four this season and played six senior games.

But he was last in the Kangaroos lineup in round nine.

"Daw is expected to be on the sidelines for up to six months and the club has opted to take the approach with his long-term future and health the primary concern," the club said in a statement.
