Melbourne coach Paul Roos wants an experimental AFL substitution rule brought in for the regular season.
As clubs prepare for the cap of 120 interchanges per game this year, the league will let them re-set their substitutes during the pre-season matches.
Under the trial, each team can change their two subs at halftime.
This means if a player has been subbed off and the team then suffers an injury during the first half, he can return to the field.
Each team will have six interchange players and two subs during the NAB Challenge, before the system reverts to three and one for the regular season.
Interchanges will be capped at 130 in the pre-season and then 120 for regular games.
"It's a really good idea," Roos said.
"I'd certainly be supportive if you could re-set your sub at halftime as well in a regular-season game.
"Sometimes you can make a sub, you have a healthy player sitting on the bench and all of a sudden you get an injury.
"I like the idea ... if you said it was three and one and you could re-set your sub, it does make a lot of sense."
