Paul Roos calls Brad Scott's readiness to coach North Melbourne until the end of this AFL season a spanner in the works of his departure.

Scott raised eyebrows on Monday night when he made it clear he was ready to stay in charge until the end of the year, and perhaps even beyond if the club wanted him.

But his fate was sealed on Friday when discussions between Scott and the board about his future were leaked to the media.

His departure was confirmed two days later, with the Kangaroos calling it a mutual agreement.

"Hearing him say that he wasn't necessarily ready to go ... we presumed he went to the board and said 'I need to finish up'," Roos told Fox Footy.

"But that throws another spanner in the works.

"I would suggest that would happen a number of times, where coaches do a pre-bye discussion, saying 'look, let's get to the end of the year, let's see at the end of the year whether I'm the right guy to do the job'.

"Someone - I don't know who it is - has clearly not wanted him to coach.

"It's a bigger story now after I've heard that."

Two-time North Melbourne premiership captain Wayne Carey also said that there had been rumblings from the start of the season about Scott's future.

Carey added that a decision on Scott was brought forward because of the increasing speculation.

Scott has also said repeatedly that he has not spoken to another club about potentially taking over as senior coach and he does not have any plans.

He wore a North Melbourne top during an extended TV interview on Monday night, explaining it was a show of support for the club he coached for nearly a decade.
