He might have South Sydney questioning their decision to let him go, but Luke Keary has been told by Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson he's not yet up to scratch.
The five-eighth was the difference maker in Thursday night's 28-24 NRL win over Canterbury after setting up three tries including Mitchell Aubusson's match-winner with nine minutes to go.
His man-of-the-match effort was highlighted by an inch-perfect cross-field kick which found a flying Daniel Tupou in the first half and gave the Bondi faithful heart that they're the real deal this year.
After scoring two tries on debut against the Gold Coast the previous week, he has been a big reason behind the Roosters 2-0 start to the 2017 season.
Despite his stellar start to his career with the Tricolours, Robinson said Keary is far from being the finished product.
"Really good first half, disappointing in the second half," Robinson said of Keary.
Of concern to Robinson, a one-on-one miss that allowed Bulldogs forward Adam Elliott to score midway through the second stanza to give the visitors a sniff of an unlikely victory.
He also struggled to cleanly pick up loose balls with his handling error resulting in a Josh Morris' try that brought the Bulldogs to within four points and set up a grandstand finish.
"That inside shoulder (missed tackle) for that try was not good enough," Robinson said.
"You can't let a guy go through your line like that.
"He missed that loose ball and then they scored. Sometimes it's hard to stop those but that inside shoulder, you can't do that.
"Luke's playing some really good footy but there were a couple of things. He's doing a really good job but he'll be disappointed with that."
Robinson said there was a lot to like about his side's start to the year but stressed there was plenty of improvement required.
"I think you saw from the first round that you've got to play some footy in 2017," Robinson said of his side's freewheeling style.
"If you're not playing footy, you won't be at the races.
"At the moment we're playing footy but we better get in control of some of that other stuff at some point. We're a long way off where we need to be but it's round two."
